Minutes 8-14-08 Meeting
The garden club met at Rick & Deb Bauer’s home on August 14th. Rick gave a presentation on tropical plants while we all enjoyed Rick & Deb’s beautiful backyard. We learned what would grow, might grow or won’t grow at all in our climate here in Indiana. He talked about wintering over tropical plants and that some would just have to be taken in to survive.
Danna talked about the purchase of 25 honey hoes and that when we need more, we need to order a larger amount due to the gas cost entailed in delivery. It was decided that we would only give one honey hoe a year to one of the owners of the garden of month. This would be done by a drawing a name and Karen Hewitt will take care of this.
We agreed to have a booth at Harvest Fest again this year. We will sell plants and seeds and display pictures of the gardens of the month. The Harvest Fest is October 4th and we will need garden clubbers to volunteer for a couple hours through out the day.
Representatives from Charlie Creek Gardens in Wabash (across from the high school) asked us to participate in a seed exchange. The exchange will take place on February 21st at Charlie Creek Gardens and they would like us to send 10 members.
Next month we will begin a program on “Putting Your Garden to Sleep”.
The first meeting will be at the library, September 4th with a demonstration on tool storage and care.
We would like to visit Ryan Baker’s Country View Greenhouse on September 11th for information on how to prepare your plants for winter. We will need to confirm this with Ryan.
Martha Music agreed to do a presentation on seeds on September 18th.
Danna asked that we take the time to dead head our gardens at Eel River Gardens. She also suggested we set aside a time next year to gather once a month to tend the gardens.
Garden of the month is David and Renee McFadden.
We need to decide if we want to pay for the cost of mums and pumpkins for the pots in the downtown area this fall. We will need to check with Tricia Puckett to see if she has enough to sell us and the cost. Danna asked Rhonda Swaidner to check with America in Bloom to see if removing the present flowers is necessary.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45.
