Garden Ornamentation
Amy Neild

July 10th 2008

Our July meeting was a pleasant trip to the home of David and Amy Neild for some first-hand examples of garden ornamentation.  Thanks to some spraying, beforehand, there weren't any mosquitoes.  Amy is extremely creative and there were enough neat things to completely fill our IDEAs page on this website.  Amazingly, she does all of this without the benefit of HGTV.  Our hostess admitted that she likes to populate her gardens without spending any money. David told of the expensive Japanese Koi they splurged on that ended up being a meal for their dog.  Amy had some good advice for over-wintering tender plants.  Rather than attempting to drag a large plant into the house, which would take up a lot of living space during the cold months,  Amy takes cuttings of easily-rooted plants and then only has to store a small container which will develop into a large plant the next Spring.

The Neilds were America in Bloom Contest Winners in 2007 for Best Vegetable Garden, and Best Use of Re-Cycled Materials.  They were also one of 5 gardens featured during the North Manchester "Welcome to My Garden" Garden Walk June 28th.  The Neilds are also actively involved in Eagle Scout projects geared toward restoring out-of-control landscapes.

Leona graciously provided some killer Red Velvet Cupcakes with grapes.
