Minutes 8-16-07 Meeting

The garden club met on August 16th at the North Manchester Public Library with Martha Music’s presentation on seeds. She showed us how to collect and store them so they will last for many years. Martha also had plants that she had grown from seeds she collected and said she saves a lot by growing plants and flowers by seed.

Deb Bauer gave the treasurer’s report and reported that we have $2,933.33 in our account. We have not paid Leesa Metzger for her work on the brick sidewalk, which has not been invoiced. We are unsure if the town has paid Maryann or the Manchester Greenhouse.

Everyone that has seen the new brick walk in the Eel River Gardens says it looks great. We still need to place 11-12 bricks in the walk when the brick maker gets the names imprinted in them. We believe we are missing one brick for the Manchester Clinic.

Garden clubers that participated in the America in Bloom judging of gardens really enjoyed the experience. We would like to give America in Bloom more support next year.

While judging Dave & Amy Neild and David & Renee McFadden’s gardens, garden clubers asked if it would be possible for the Garden Club to view their gardens. Both couples were happy to let us visit.

Nancy Reed agreed to talk with us about our budget at our October meeting. She informed us that we have a tax free number we have not been taken advantage of.

We signed a thank you card for John Mugford for all the watering he has done this summer. We really appreciated all the effort he made to keep the Eel River Gardens looking great this year.

The Library asked if we would be interested in doing programs on fall cleanup and gardening. Several members said they would do a short program on topics they had previously done at our meetings. Also Tim Morbitzer might be interested in doing a program.

The Harvest Festival is October 6th in North Manchester and it was decided that we would like to have a booth. We would like to sell seeds and plants if possible. Also we would like to set up a computer demonstrating our web site. Pictures of the Gardens of the Month will be on display also. Martha Music, Nancy Reed, Ruth Hawley and Beth Culbertson volunteered to help with the booth. If anyone else would like to help, please let us know.

We talked about trying to do a calendar with gardens and flowers next year. We will need to gather more information on the cost before going forward.

Our next meeting is September 13th at Maryann Swiharts home. Maryann will be doing a program on flower arranging. We are also planning a plant swap. We will bring plants or seeds that we would like to share that we collected during our fall cleanup.

Please clean your sections of the Eel River Gardens so they look nice for Harvest Fest.
