Containers as Gardens
Bob Bohn, Master Gardener
March 22th 2007

Once again, the Blocker Room was the site for the third March Into Spring presentation covering gardening in containers.  So far, the presentations from our own club members have been way better than the guest speakers we have enlisted in the past..

Gardening in containers seemingly requires more insight than the new-to-container gardener might initially realize.  The size of the pot must be considered, especially if you want it to contain many plants, yet if too big it becomes a burden to move and store during over-wintering.  Soil composition is more critical in container plantings since it dries out much faster, and extra fertilizer may be required with so many plants in a confined space.  While often ignored, Bob pointed out that Japanese Maples, Boxwoods, Crape Myrtles and Azaleas are superb picks for high impact.

Those who are suddenly tropical-crazy, might try a combination of Red Abyssinian Banana, with a Duranta, two Coleus Wizard Velvets, and a Sweet Potato Margarite.

For a real "show-stopper" sure to make your neighbors salivate, combine 3 Canna Wyomings, Nasturtium Whirlybird, Lantana Patriot Orange, and 12 Coleus Sedonas. (all available at www.parkseed.com)

As Bob answers questions, his presentation inspired avid note-taking.

Gardening in containers can be a real blast!  Once again, the Library provided the 'java" and this week Martha brought the "eats".

Since Lyle started showing up, Bob and Rick can quit arguing now about which one is the better-looking guy in the Garden Club.  Both are ecstatic, however, to have a third representative from the male species present.
